Fort St George
Fort St George is a central and fabulous highlight in Chennai. Tamil Nadu Secretariat and Legislative Assembly are situated here.This marvelous monument is build in 1640 AD by British East India company. This place attain its name from Saint George, the patron saint of England.This fort houses St. Mary’s Church , The Fort Museum,Wellesley House,and Flag post. St. Mary’s Church is the oldest Anglican church in India and the tombstone in its courtyard are the oldest British tombstones in India. The Fort Museum exhibits many items of the period of British rule. Museum is spread over three floors and a grand marble statue of Lord Cornwallis greets the tourist from all over the world. The Flag post at the fort is made of teak wood, it is 150 feet high and it is tallest in the country.
National Art Gallery
National Art Gallery, also famous as Victoria Memorial Hall. It is located in Pantheon Rd, Madras.This wonderful monument was built in Mughal-Jaipuri style with a pink sandstone façade, Chennai polished cement finish inside and marble flooring, it was designed by Henry Irwin. The gallery contains various traditions of Indian painting including the Rajput and Moghul schools. Here exhibits older Indian handicrafts, 17th century Deccan paintings, verity of Mughal and Rajasthani paintings and 10th century bronzes.
Ripon Building
Ripon Building, is one of the landmarks left by British administration.Is one of the most beautiful modern British constructions in Madras. The Ripon Building stands tall proudly in its original on the Central Station of Chennai .The magnificence of the building has not been altered with time. Marble and Cuddapah stone has been used for its flooring . An important element of the Ripon building is its chiming clock which is set up in the terrace. Presently this wonderful building is the headquarters of Chennai Corporation, is a combination of three types of architectural styles – Gothic, Ironic and Corinthian.
